As is my custom, I was sitting with my morning beverage today going through my morning pre-game ritual, as outlined in the post Exercise – Envision – Read – Meditate – Pray – Empower .

(Yes, I do consider every day to be a present in the game of life)

I was thinking about what messages I have received that would benefit you, the reader of this Blog Post.

In the process of  launching Version 2 of the “Real People Helping Real People”  program – designed to give YOU the best chance of  victory against your most consistent and dangerous opponent in life – YOUR HABITS –  I have been reviewing my notes from various Conferences that I have attended and actively participated over the years.  I was specifically drawn today to a Philadelphia Leadership Conference, held in Conshohocken, PA in July of 2013. It struck me again that Companies, Products, and Technologies may come and go, but the principles of leadership are timeless…

One of my favorite sessions was the one taught by Coach Tom Safford – introduced as the “youngest multi-million dollar earner in Primerica“.

When Tom’s father, the late, GREAT Bob Safford, wrote the Foreword to the book “The Wisdom Of Andrew Carnegie as taught to Napoleon Hill” – one of the foundation texts that form the underpinnings of  our Real People Helping Real People programs – Bob noted that “both of my sons and I have worked together for over 25 years to build our businesses which currently consists of over 500 offices and 15,00 people nationwide that write over $2 Billion (with a ‘B’) of sales volume creating over $100 million of after tax profit for our suppliers

Might Tom have learned from his father disciplines and wisdom that would benefit the generations to follow?

I know how I answer that question.

Might they benefit YOU, Dear Reader?

Now, why would I be reflecting on these concept so deeply at this time?

Co-incidence? I don’t think so 🙂

The theme of Tom’s presentation was:

OUR HABITS SCHEDULE OUR SUCCESS

While the general discussion item was the role of goals in outlining your specific schedule to success, I was struck by two basic principles that, when implemented, set the successful people apart.

#1 – Successful people form the habits of doing things that those who fail won’t

and

#2 – if you don’t deliberately set good habits you unconsciously form bad ones.

:-)

To underscore this message, let me offer the following poem for your reflection:

The Habit Poem

I am your constant companion.

I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command.

Half of the things you do you might as well turn over to me and I will do them – quickly and correctly.

I am easily managed – you must be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically.

I am the servant of great people, and alas, of all failures as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures.

I am not a machine though I work with the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a person.

You may run me for profit or run me for ruin – it makes no difference to me.

Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet.

Be easy with me and I will destroy you.

Who am I? I am Habit.

WOW – Words Of Wisdom.

If I am to grow to be the person I was created to be it is essential that I strive to follow disciplines that add value into the lives of others and remove habits that detract from my value to myself.

Thank You, Tom, for bringing that to my attention, front and centre…

  1. Wow Peter – I loved that poem and it’s so true. If you don’t create good habits, it leads a vaccuum for the bad ones to come in. I have found that success in business and in life comes down to doing the right things long enough consistently. And consistency is achieved through good habits! Thanks for sharing!

      Lisa: As another Dr – Doctor Napoleon Hill – puts it in the great selfe confidence formula, article 1 “I know that I have the ability to achieve ny definite purpose in life. Therefore I DEMAND of myself, persistent, continuous ACTION towards its attainment” 🙂 prp I bow to the wisdom of the Spirit within you.

      Andrea: You are so welcome. Napoleon Hill speaks to this in the “recent” publication “Outwitting The Devil” when he talks about the unconscious habit that most people fall afoul of – that of “drifting through life”. A trait that you so obviously, even at your young age, have not allowee to enter your life. I bow to the wisdom of the Spirit within you. Namaste, prp.
