JOURNAL OF A LIFE – Good-Bye My Country… Hello, My Country

The wealthy OWN assets. The poor NEVER HAVE assets.
The middle class get the two (ASSETS AND LIABILITIES) confused… 🙂

As a great mentor of mine – Joe Schroeder – never tired of saying “A Life Worth Living is a Life Worth Recording

so today I am here to share another episode in the life’s journey of one of the great people whose life I am privileged to have shared a part of – my mother AnneKaete Pocklington.

The War Is Over – Good-Bye My Country… Hello, My Country

Imagine, if you will, that your time in your little piece of heaven has come to an end.

Imagine you are being uprooted,

leaving family, friends, all that is familiar,

only the three of you, yourself, your young husband, and your precious little baby.

You are crossing the North Sea…

Just another small part of my mother’s life story.

Good-Bye My Country… Hello, My Country

We traveled by Bus to Osnabruck. Lots of families from the married Quarters, as HMS Shorebase Royal Rupert was finished, gone, dissolved. And then the special train, this was a Forces train from the Hook of Holland. And then, it was almost midnight by now, we went on Board, the last whistle, and the Continental Coast went further and further away. And Peter must have felt the utter despair in his Mam’s mind. He just cried and cried, all night. And a very, very stern Sergeant Major-like Nurse on Board, shouted and was so very cross because “the mother can’t even keep her own brat quiet”.

But that was too much for our lovely friend Rita Mackintosh. We had been neighbours for 18 happy months, she lived in the flat below ours. Rita told this fiend to shut up. And then she helped me to quieten my Baby. The men were on the other side of the ship, we were not allowed to travel together.

I will never forget Rita’s kindness that night. She was wonderful. And then it was morning. And there really were some ‘White Cliffs’ and the sun was shining, my Baby was now fast asleep completely exhausted, and he was in my arms as I went down the gangplank and stepped for the first time – onto English soil.

And it was not foggy, and the sun was shining, and there stood a real English Bobby, a real English Policeman, and he smiled and was so very helpful and friendly, so were the Customs men, and one felt just a bit guilty for having been so frightened of it all.

And even though we were going to live with Bill’s brother Lawrence in Braintree, Essex, we went up North first to Bill’s father. Yes, we would be living with Lol. He had no wife and had a Prefab bungalow all by himself. And he was looking forward to his brother, wife and baby, sharing this with him for a while . But now we went through the country to Yorkshire, to Bill’s Dad, where his sister Dorothy was also living. She belonged to Sheffield but houses were not to be had, these were very difficult times, so she stayed with Dad and her husband Frank came every 2 weeks to visit her and her two children.

I knew Dad had no room for us for any length of time, but we just wanted to get to know them all, and show them our Treasure, our Peter.

If  life is the best teacher, doesn’t it make sense to learn from the lives of others?

So what did I learn from today’s episode?

I learned that after a War life doesn’t always turn out as planned, even with “guarantees” from the authorities, and

I learned that there may well be deep, psychological reasons beneath a dislike for sea-travel that accompanies me to this day, decades later.

So Now it’s YOUR turn, dear Reader. What did YOU learn?
