As a great mentor of mine – Joe Schroeder – never tired of saying “A Life Worth Living is a Life Worth Recording

so today I am here to share another episode in the life’s journey of one of the great people whose life I am privileged to have shared a part of – my mother AnneKaete Pocklington.

The War Is Over – The Gypsies Set Off Again

Imagine, if you will, that your temporary stay in “God’s Own Country” has come to an end.

Your life that was packed up in boxes has safely overcome the stress of being ‘shipped’ – quite literally.

You set off for the promised land and the home you will create”Down South”.

But wait…

By council decree there is, figuratively speaking, “no room at the inn”

The Gypsies Set Off Again

At last the news came that our cases and boxes had all arrived and were now on the way to Lol in Braintree. That was our signal to set off down South. So we left this lovely part of England, and the little white Cottage with the roses behind us, and the once a week bus-rides to the lovely little town of Bedale, with its row of shops around the cobbled market square. Down to Braintree where the land was flat, almost like Holland. And very large fields full of Corn, or rather where corn had been and now yellow stubbles were the last remnants of a harvest well gathered. Lol was so happy to see us we got on right from the start, like Brother and sister. And we had a real bathroom again, a real kitchen, and a little garden at the front, and it seemed like a dream. And all Lol’s friends were most kind and helpful and patient with me and my broken English.

And then came the bombshell. Houses, homes, were so hard to get that Councils were very strict. And all the lads had come back from the War, and a lot more people had got married sooner than they otherwise might have been. This always happens just after a War. The lads come home, and with the general happiness that brings, things do happen. And lots and lots of little families were desperate for four walls they could call their own.

And so, Braintree decided that, if anybody in their houses had room to spare, and was willing to let some off, permission would be given if those were Braintree people, not outsiders. Everybody should apply to their authority from which they had come etc. etc. And this meant for a happyfamily, that they were Gypsies once more. And all well laid plans were worth nothing. The winter was coming on, and we had to go to the Authority where Bill was born.

And so I told my Baby Boy in my arms, I told him, don’t cry my darling, a long long time ago, a very important family were also told to go to where they belonged and be counted. And that little boy was not even born then. And so, maybe it was meant to teach us some thing . . . . . . We three still loved each other so very very dearly . . . . .

🙂

If  life is the best teacher, doesn’t it make sense to learn from the lives of others?

So what did I learn from today’s episode?

I learned that when there is a shortage agreements and promises are never as strong as they seemed, and

I learned, reading ‘between the lines’ of the descriptions of who is in her thoughts at these dark periods of her life,  of the FAITH my mother must have had to get her through

So Now it’s YOUR turn, dear Reader. What did YOU learn?

  1. That’s so unfortunate that families had to apply to get a house. People should have the right to build and live wherever they want.

How I wished I could have met your Mum Peter

    Can’t wait for tomorrow’s installment!

Lisa, there is definitely a dark side to allowing people to “build wherever they want”. And after a War with much destruction through bombing the law of “supply and demand” would also have been inappropriate. The Councils had to make their decisions, but it was, as you say, really unfortunate for those caught in the “Twilight ZOne”, as it were. TY, TY, TY from the bottom of my heart, for all your encouragement. prp
