Politically Aware And Alive

History may be written in the books of the famous – but it is created by the lives of everyday individuals

Politically Aware And Alive

At around that time, Bill and I became very involved in Politics. We both worked for 100% Union ‘Shops’. And through my upbringing, if you had joined something you better know what it was all about, don’t let another Hitler come in the back way. So right from the beginning we had concerned ourselves as to who was in Power, what were their  Rules, what was the opposition like, were they strong enough, for instance, when needed. NEVER accepting anything on face value.

Bill was naturally interested, and our friends also were, this was a very important thing in our lives. Also, having married a German Girl, with a recent disaster (to put it mildly) with a man who had got to be a Dictator BECAUSE ordinary people did not care or could not be bothered.

We made it our concern to know, be informed etc. But watching all the time NOT to become Fanatics, the scourge of humans. Our view of fanaticism was very alive and watchful. And voting a certain way because it was done in ones family, or “when are ye doin sommit foar t’ Workers”, was not Bill’s way, nor mine. He never ever missed to vote from the day he was entitled to, but never, never told who he had voted for. To him, the right to have a vote, a secret vote, was almost holy.

As it was, we had great fun being serious, were active in the birth of a LuddendenFoot Labour Party, had good friends who were M.P.’s (just by chance), got Christmas Cards from the Houses of Parliament, had the voting Office in our House, not far from the voting Place at the school. It was all very exciting.  Knocking on doors and asking people to come and vote! And being sometimes sworn at in the foulest of language!

All the time being wonderful friends with George and Noreen Carter, whom I mentioned before.

In those days English Politics were something to be proud of. It made a difference who was in Power. It was all very honest Politics. One could rely on everyone and everything, and real Fanaticism did not really set in until the Thatcher Time. This, as fanaticism always does, distorted the whole Picture.

But that is another Story. The point was that Bill was very, very interested and enjoyed those times greatly.

At a time today, when the political stalemate between Democrats and Republicans, The House and The Senate might resemble the situation when Shakespeare penned the words “A Pox On Both Their Houses”, the thought of Politics “being something to be proud of”, that “it made a difference who was in Power”. What a concept!

For myself, I hope that today’s post has, in some way, encouraged you – Dear Reader – to reflect on the life journeys you have and are undertaking.

As well as those undertaken by those who are near and dear to YOU.

You are who you are because of these journeys.

Where is YOUR journey taking you next, I wonder?
